The estuary was classified as a Wetland of International Importance and was later included in the Natura 2000 Network. Apart from that, it's on the list of the Ramsar convention (an international agreement on the protection of waterfowl habitats) and was designated a Biosphere Reserve in 2007 because of its biological diversity.
The estuary's resources have been harnessed throughout History. Currently, it still sees a flurry of activity: fishing, shellfish gathering, maritime trade, nautical activities, leisure sports, bird watching... A sea of possibilities make this place an invaluable natural space.
